On this day in history: January 10, 1926 🌳 Col. Luke Lea made a transformative gift to the City of Nashville—868 acres of land that became the foundation of Percy Warner Park. 🌿 This included 543 acres of the “High Pasture,” now the iconic entrance at the end of Belle Meade Boulevard, and 325 acres owned jointly by Lea’s Belle Meade Land Company and Percy Warner’s Nashville Railway & Light Co. At the heart of this donation was a vision: a public park for all to enjoy, part of Percy Warner’s dream of a “necklace” of parks encircling Nashville. 🌟 The historic trolley line, which once ran along what is now the center of Belle Meade Boulevard, brought people to explore the beauty of this land—and continues to inspire connection to nature today. Thank you, Col. Lea and Percy Warner, for laying the foundation of this beloved park. 🏞️

We had an incredible day at the banding station—over 100 birds captured in a single session! 🐦❄️ This rare milestone was likely thanks to the weekend’s drop in temperature and snow, drawing birds to the feeders. The last time we hit triple digits was February 2, 2013! With volunteers-in-training joining us, it was an amazing learning experience for all. Many of today’s birds were recaptures, proving Warner Parks continues to be an essential habitat and sanctuary for our feathered friends year after year. This week by the numbers:
# of birds captured: 124
# of recaptures: 62

6. Carolina Chickadee Did you know the Warner Parks BIRD Program has a public banding station at the @warnerparknaturecenter? You can watch federally licensed researchers capture, record, and band migratory and resident birds up close! All ages are welcome. Join us at an upcoming BIRD Program event:
- Winter Bird Banding: Tuesday, January 14th from 8AM to 12PM
- Bird Hike: Birds of the Hill Forest: Friday, January 17th from 9 to 11AM
- Winter Bird Banding: Wednesday, January 22nd from 12 to 4PM .
