❄️ Meet the 2025 Winter SWEAT Team! The SWEAT Program (Special Work, Education, and Trails) is one of the longest runnings initiatives in the Warner Parks. The bird of the day for this week’s banding sess

The bird of the day for this week’s banding session was Downy Woodpecker! We captured a whopping 35 Woodpeckers 🎉, 7 of which were unbanded, and 28 were recaptures! Woodpeckers have unique, funky-looking feet that help them cling to the sides of trees and branches. They have a reversed outer toe, making it so that there’s two in front and two in back. This toe pattern, called “zygodactyl”, helps them to cling upright! We recaptured a Hermit Thrush this week that was caught and given a MOTUS radio transmitter in November. Between then and now, this Hermit Thrush has gained 6.2 grams! 👏 Despite the cold temperatures, the birds still seem to be finding enough food to build up their fat reserves. This is especially helpful for migratory species, like this thrush, as he prepares to head out on his long journey back to his Canadian breeding grounds! This week by the numbers:

# of recaptures: 71

6: Hermit Thrush with MOTUS Radio Transmitter The Warner Parks BIRD Program has a public banding station at the @warnerparknaturecenter 🌳 You can watch federally licensed researchers capture, record, and band migratory and resident birds up close! All ages are welcome. Join us at an upcoming BIRD Program event:
- Winter Bird Banding: Tuesday, January 28th from 8am-12pm
- Cards and Cardinals: Saturday, February 1st from 10am-12pm
