A week from today, the 84th running of the Iroquoi

A week from today, the 84th running of the Iroquois Steeplechase will take place in Percy Warner Park. This horse race is a storied Nashville tradition and one of the premier steeplechase races in the United States. First held in 1941, the race takes place each May and has grown into a major social and sporting event, drawing thousands of spectators in celebration of southern culture, philanthropy, and horse racing. The steeplechase track at Percy Warner Park in Nashville is unique in that it is the only steeplechase course in the United States built by the federal government. It was constructed in the 1930s by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), a New Deal agency created during the Great Depression to provide public works jobs. The track was part of a broader initiative to develop park infrastructure and recreational facilities, and its creation reflects the unique partnership between conservation, recreation, and government investment during that era. With the race’s rich history and vibrant atmosphere, the Iroquois Steeplechase remains a beloved fixture in Nashville’s spring calendar.
