Special Activities
- 9 – 11AM: Hummingbird Banding Demonstrations
- 1PM: “Native Plant Choices to Support Hummingbirds for Each Season” lead by native plant propagator and guest presenter Joy Boven
From Spring to Fall, there are native plants that hummingbirds look for and have evolved with in our wild spaces. Planting more of this material on our properties gives us the opportunity to not only enjoy their visits, but support their future generations. Joy Boven has been in the Nashville horticulture industry for over 14 years. She is the owner of Wonder Gift & Garden, a retail shop focused on selling and promoting native plant material. She also owns Simple Joy Nursery, a wholesale operation that specializes in growing native perennials. Both businesses strive to offer the Nashville Area plant material that supports our local ecosystems. Wonder Gift and Garden will be on site throughout the event selling hummingbird-attracting native plants as an accompaniment to this presentation.
About Hummingbirds
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are the only species of hummingbirds that nest east of the Mississippi and have the largest breeding range of any North American hummingbird. They can be found in Middle Tennessee March-October, however, August and September are the best time to see hummingbirds at feeders because the adults and young of the year are migrating through Tennessee on their way to Central America for the winter. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are among the tiniest birds in the world, weighing just 1/8 ounce, less than a penny. Males are smaller than females and have the red throat. On average males weigh 3.0 grams and females weigh 3.5 grams. Juvenile birds look very similar to adult females with emerald green backs and white-tipped tails.
Warner Park Nature Center is an environmental education facility owned and operated by Nashville Metro Parks. Located at 7311 Highway 100, 37221, in Edwin Warner Park, the nature center is free and open to the public Tuesday-Saturday, 9AM to 4PM.
